Meals-on-Wheels plans to build a 24,470 square foot building where we will initially be cooking more than 1,200 fresh hot meals a day – with opening projections tentatively slated for Fall of 2012. The new Meals-on-Wheels kitchen will...
- enable Meals-on-Wheels to reduce transportation and production costs by building a central location close to the people we serve,
- an initial savings in food costs by nearly $1 per meal,
- improve the quality of the meals we serve to our needy elderly and disabled residents,
- provide a permanent facility that will serve our community now and for many years to come, and
- meet the needs of the growing elderly and disabled population in Johnson and Ellis Counties.
"This is an incredible opportunity for us, as it will solidify our future, and allow us to better serve those who need services," Vinsen Faris, executive director said. "The location is in the heart of our two-county area."
Meals-on-Wheels plans to raise $4 million dollars for the kitchen, office spaces and service equipment. The lead gift of $500,000 from The Joe Barton Family Foundation, as well as a gift of 2.5 acres from TXI helped launch the campaign. With planning for the project well underway, the official announcement of The Kitchen Campaign was made at the Campaign Kickoff Celebration "A Night Under the Stars" on March 28.
