Kicking
off March 1, NASCAR driver Robby Gordon joins the Meals-On-Wheels
Association of America and its local programs nationwide for their
annual March
For Meals campaign.
This year’s slogan “So No Senior Goes Hungry,”
is the rallying cry of the campaign. This year, in particular, there
are three goals for the campaign: (1) Raise awareness of senior
hunger, (2) recruit new volunteers to join the fight against senior
hunger, and (3) raise money that will be used at the local level.
In
our community, Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson & Ellis Counties will
promote its services to the community through local media outlets
throughout the month of March, and an area-wide mail appeal that
will hit local mailboxes mid-March.
“We hope the 2005 March For Meals campaign will help rally
the community behind our organization and the vital work that we
do,” explained Amy Jackson, Director of Development. “Everyday,
nationwide, hundreds of thousands of senior citizens go hungry.
More than 425 everyday right here in our own community.”
Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson & Ellis Counties has been serving
the homebound elderly and disabled residents since April 0f 2001,
and continues to face the challenge of an ever-growing population.
“We are currently serving the poorest, frailest, and most
needy population we have ever seen in the history of the organization,”
Jackson added. “We are working hard to change this, not leaving
anyone without, but we continue to need your help and the support
of the community. Every person can make a difference, whether it
is by donating, volunteering, or educating yourself and others about
senior hunger issues.”
Senior nutrition programs nationwide provide congregate and home-delivered
meal services for elderly people in need. The Meals On Wheels Association
of America (MOWAA) is a national organization whose mission is to
provide visionary leadership and professional training for Meals-on-Wheels
programs nationwide, and to develop partnerships that will ensure
the provision of quality nutrition services. Meals-on-Wheels of
Johnson & Ellis Counties is a nationally certified Meals-on-Wheels
program through MOWAA.
